Solar-powered s'mores!

October 9, 2025

High School West's ninth grade Earth and Space Science students at recently embarked on an eye-opening journey exploring global challenges and scientific wonders. Students learned about the struggles many people in developing countries face in accessing clean cooking fuel, gaining empathy and awareness of real-world issues.

At the same time, they delved into the science of nuclear fusion and how the Sun’s rays reach Earth, discovering how different parts of the solar spectrum can be harnessed right here at home to make delicious s’mores!

Designing and making solar ovens and posters to present what they learned to a group of faculty, staff, and administrative judges helped the students blend global perspectives and hands-on science, making for a truly enriching learning experience.

Thank you to Earth and Space Science teachers, Kimberly Williams and Kathleen Gillen for leading this creative activity!
