Students at Great Hollow Middle School are soaring through the 7th grade PLTW elective, Flight and Space!

Taught in the Technology Education Department, the course began with students crafting and testing paper airplanes to explore how different designs perform. Recently, they’ve been diving into the history and science of flight by creating kites and hot air balloons—learning the fascinating principles that keep aircraft aloft along the way.

Next, students will design virtual gliders using a specialized computer program, then print their plans and bring them to life using balsa wood. They’re also sharpening their aviation skills through a flight simulation program, which will soon challenge them to navigate virtual aircraft using yokes—flying across New York State and even around the world!
