West scientists make their mark!
Several Smithtown High School West student researchers earned top honors at both the SAAWA Science Fair Award Ceremony and the New York State Science and Engineering Fair (NYSSEF).
At the SAAWA Science Fair, Alexis DiBernardo received Honorable Mention in Environmental Science for her research using bacteria to biodegrade microplastics, while AnnaMarie Piazza earned Honorable Mention in Biology for her study on the effects of sleep deprivation on fruit flies. Sameha Vundecode (not pictured) received 3rd Place and a monetary award in STEM for designing and building a quadruped robot.

At the NYSSEF, Kaitlynn Jho earned 3rd Place in Biology for her project, The Study on How Halobacterium salinarum Impacts Water Salinity. Her research examined how extremophile bacteria—organisms that thrive in harsh environments—can affect the salt content of their surroundings.

All four students placed among the top 25% of competitors in their respective categories. Congratulations on these outstanding achievements, and best of luck as you continue your research journeys next year!
