Two Wins for Civic Readiness!

Congratulations to SCSD Social Studies teachers and Seal of Civic Readiness Coordinators, June Tener and Joan Havranek on securing two major achievements for the district's civics programs!

They earned third place nationally in the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History’s Building Better Citizens contest. Their winning lesson plan focuses on news literacy and combating misinformation, equipping students with essential skills to evaluate digital media, analyze sources, and navigate today's complex information landscape.

They also secured a $4,000 NYSUT Civic Readiness Grant through the union’s Classroom to Community initiative. This funding will support hands-on learning, civil discourse, and community-focused initiatives that broaden access to the New York State Seal of Civic Readiness across both high schools. Specifically, Tener and Havranek will use a portion of the grant to launch "Seal, Snacks, and Service"—an after-school program designed to help students brainstorm, plan, and kick-start their own impactful service-learning projects.
