The Smithtown Central School District hosted yet another successful Trade Union/Department of Labor Career Fair for students from High School East and West. This collaborative event, organized by the Guidance Department, Career and Technical Education Department, and the Industry Advisory Board, aimed to address the growing demand for skilled workers in the trades. It provided an invaluable opportunity for 10th, 11th and 12th grade students, as well as parents, to explore apprenticeships, training programs, and career paths in law enforcement.
The fair was guided by hosts Philip Como, Coordinator of the Work Experience and Internship Program; Kelly Brothers, HSE School Counselor Instructional Specialist; Christine LoFrese, Director of CTE/Business/FACS/Technology; and Kevin Colon, Administrator for Guidance.
Attendees had the privilege of listening to insights from prominent speakers such as Robert Caroppoli, Chief of Staff for Senator Mattera; David Malico, Training Director/Apprenticeship Coordinator for Building Laborers Local 66; April Carnevale, a Parent Member; and Laura Galletta, Director of the SCCC Advanced Manufacturing Training Center.
An array of booths were featured, representing organizations such as the Suffolk County Department of Civil Service, Suffolk County Community College's Advanced Manufacturing Center, Laborers Local 1298, Local 28, Local 290, Suffolk County Department of Labor, and several other trade unions and law enforcement agencies. This diverse representation underscored the broad spectrum of career opportunities available to students.
Looking ahead, plans are in place to expand this event, aiming for even greater participation from our students and families as well as increased participation of trade and labor unions, the Department of Labor, law enforcement, and the military. There is also an interest in inviting more local districts to join this enriching career exploration experience.
