Third Annual Thomas Mooney Breakfast

April 20, 2026

Local veterans were the guests of honor on April 17, as the Smithtown High School West Social Studies Honor Society, Rho Kappa, held a breakfast paying tribute to late veteran, Thomas Mooney.

This event began three years ago by students who had worked closely with Mr. Mooney and were appreciative of his mentorship and service. This year’s breakfast was hosted by Smithtown West leadership students Skylar Labossiere and Kate Tenety, with guidance from teachers Daniela McKee and Nancy Stewart.

“Mr. Mooney was a beloved member of our High School West family, and several of his grandchildren have graduated from here over the last few years,” said Labossiere. “We are honored to carry on his mission through this breakfast and the continued tradition of the VFW competition.”

Mooney was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in 1967 and is also a retired police officer. He died peacefully on Sept. 24 at the age of 80. Mooney was a member of the local VFW post and was the organizer of the VFW Voice of Democracy Essay Contest for local students grades 9-12.

Speakers at the breakfast were Assistant Superintendent of Schools for Instruction and Administration, Dr. Kevin Simmons, High School West Principal, William Holl, Commander of the Smithtown VFW Post 10870, Timothy Roach, Michael Fitzpatrick, New York State Assemblyman.

A certificate of recognition from Senator Mario Mattera was awarded to Smithtown High School West Rho Kappa.
