The Addictive Brain: H.S. students attend presentation

October 7, 2026

Smithtown High School East and West students had the opportunity to hear from internationally recognized neuroscientist Dr. Stephen L. Dewey, a research professor at NYU School of Medicine, as he brought his powerful presentation on addiction to Smithtown on Oct. 7.

Drawing on decades of research and experience, Dr. Dewey explored how addiction affects the developing brain and challenged students to think critically about the choices and influences they encounter every day.

“I just want to make sure you’re aware of what’s going,” Dr. Dewey told the students.

The presentation addressed a range of topics impacting today’s teens, including social media, gambling, substance use, fentanyl awareness, games such as Fornite and Roblox, and the science of addiction.

Dr. Dewey has been visiting schools and speaking with students about addiction since 1994, sharing his expertise and helping young people better understand the science behind addiction.
