Sweet Success at Hershey Park
More than 250 talented musicians from Smithtown High School East and Smithtown High School West enjoyed an unforgettable weekend at the Music in the Parks Festival in Hershey, Pennsylvania, combining outstanding musical achievement with memorable experiences at Hershey Park.
Representing High School East, the Concert Choir, under the direction of Mr. Mark Hegreness, earned a Superior rating in its division. The Symphonic Orchestra, led by Mr. Brian McCoy, received a Superior rating and captured First Place in its division. The Symphonic Band, under the direction of Mrs. Jennifer Leavy, also earned a Superior rating, First Place in its division, and was recognized as the Best Overall Band of the festival.

High School West musicians also delivered exceptional performances. The Concert Choir, directed by Mr. James Brosnan, the Symphonic Band, directed by Mr. Frank Scheno, and the Symphonic Orchestra, directed by Mr. Joseph Cotignola, each earned the festival’s highest distinction: a Superior rating. The Symphonic Orchestra went on to earn First Place in its category and was named Best Overall Orchestra of the entire festival—an impressive accomplishment in a highly competitive field.

The Music in the Parks Festival offers students a unique opportunity to showcase their talents in a rigorous adjudicated setting while also enjoying a day of recreation and camaraderie at Hershey Park.
For many students, the trip was about more than awards.
“Going to Hershey Park with the music department has been the favorite field trip of my high school experience,” said High School West senior Katherine Norris. “Getting to make music with my best friends and enjoy a weekend of fun was an unforgettable experience!”
High School East junior Lyliannah LaBate echoed those sentiments.
“The Hershey trip was amazing,” she said. “Being able to perform, support one another, and spend time together outside of school helped strengthen our friendships and our sense of community. Experiences like this remind us that the music department is more than just classes and rehearsals. We are a family that learns, grows, and celebrates together. It is such a meaningful opportunity for everyone who can participate and something that makes our program even stronger.”
The Smithtown Central School District extends its congratulations to all of the student musicians who represented their schools and community with excellence, dedication, and outstanding character. The district also thanks the teachers, staff members, and chaperones whose commitment and support made this memorable experience possible.
