Suffolk County Teen Poet Laureate

June 11, 2026

High School West sophomore Maxwell Alpert is using his words to make an impact.

Maxwell has officially been named the Suffolk County Teen Poet Laureate, a prestigious two-year honorary position established by the Suffolk County Legislature in 2022 and coordinated in partnership with the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association. He was formally inducted during a ceremony held at the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association in Huntington.

The Teen Poet Laureate program celebrates outstanding young writers who demonstrate excellence in poetry or spoken word, a commitment to civic engagement, and a passion for using their voices to uplift others. As Suffolk County Teen Poet Laureate, Maxwell will help promote poetry among young people throughout the county and encourage fellow students to discover and develop their own creative voices.

Maxwell’s journey to this distinguished honor began with a recommendation from Smithtown High School West English teacher Robert Kuletsky. From there, he advanced through a competitive selection process, earning finalist status before ultimately being chosen for the role.

Created to amplify youth voices and bring poetry into the community as a positive force, the Teen Poet Laureate program encourages young residents to reach their full potential through creative expression and leadership. Maxwell’s achievement is a testament to his talent, dedication, and passion for the written word.

Congratulations, Maxwell, on this remarkable accomplishment!
