Shining bright like a diamond

June 2, 2026

At just 16 years old, Smithtown High School East sophomore Diamond Armello is making his mark as one of the top young Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitors in the world. Ranked No. 2 by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) for both 2024 and 2025, Diamond has turned years of dedication and determination into international success.

What began five years ago as a way to “get a little tougher” quickly became a passion. Through daily training, Diamond earned his blue belt at just 15 years old and has competed across the United States and around the world, including Brazil, Portugal, Ireland, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Colombia, Canada, and Puerto Rico. This summer alone, he plans to compete in Texas, Brazil, throughout Asia, and potentially Japan.

When asked the secret to his success, Diamond says it's no secret: “Practice. I train every day of the week.”

Looking ahead, Diamond says he hopes to continue competing at the highest levels and one day open his own Jiu-Jitsu studio to mentor the next generation of athletes.

Congratulations, Diamond, on your incredible achievements. The Smithtown community is proud to cheer you on as you continue your journey from Smithtown to the world stage!
