Seal, Snacks & Service

Smithtown Central School District Social Studies teachers and Seal of Civic Readiness Coordinators June Tener and Joan Havranek are helping students turn their ideas for making a difference into action through a new after-school program, “Seal, Snacks, and Service.”

Using a portion of a grant they earned, Tener and Havranek launched the program to provide students with guidance, inspiration and support as they brainstorm, plan and begin their own impactful 25-hour service-learning projects. These projects can help students earn points toward the Seal of Civic Readiness.

The first “Triple S” meetings at Smithtown High School East and Smithtown High School West were met with enthusiasm, as students came together to make dozens of cards that will be mailed to Cards for Hospitalized Kids, bringing messages of encouragement and kindness to children in hospitals.

Students also learned more about how to develop their own service-learning projects and turn their ideas into meaningful community contributions.

The service continues next month! At the October “Seal, Snacks, and Service” meeting, students will create dog toys from upcycled T-shirts to donate to the Smithtown Animal Shelter in recognition of Adopt a Shelter Dog Month.
