Five students from Smithtown High School East’s Research Program presented their Brookhaven National Laboratory beamline research at the Brookhaven Science Scholars Symposium on Thursday evening.

Working at NSLS-II on beamline 28-ID-2, the students used X-ray powder diffraction to analyze soil and leaf samples from an innovative experiment that repurposed Japanese Stiltgrass — an invasive weed — into organic fertilizer. The research allowed students to prepare and study bulk samples for advanced software analysis while collaborating with students from multiple schools during shared beam time.

Congratulations to these outstanding young scientists for showcasing their impressive research and collaboration in the scientific community!
