Outstanding! Social Studies Teacher of the Year
A career in corporate law may seem worlds away from a high school social studies classroom, but for Smithtown High School East teacher June Tener, the journey has led to one of the profession’s highest honors.
Last week, Tener was recognized as the Outstanding High School Social Studies Teacher of the Year by the Long Island Council for the Social Studies (LICSS) during a special ceremony at Long Island University.

“I have found that teaching means so much more than simply delivering information to students,” Tener said. “It is about connecting with students and hopefully guiding them through their challenges and accomplishments.”
The LICSS Outstanding High School Social Studies Teaching Award honors educators who demonstrate exceptional classroom instruction, meaningful student engagement, and a deep commitment to the field of social studies.
After leaving a successful career as an attorney, Tener joined the Smithtown Central School District in 2001 and has spent the past 25 years inspiring students through engaging instruction and a passion for civic education. She was nominated for the award by fellow teacher Joan Havranek.
Smithtown Central School District Director of Social Studies Dr. Charles Benvenuto praised Tener’s impact on both students and colleagues.
“This recognition is a testament to the passion, dedication, and excellence June brings to her students and to our department every single day,” Dr. Benvenuto said. “Whether in the classroom, in her work with the Seal of Civic Readiness, or as a colleague, June consistently goes above and beyond.”
In 2023, Tener was selected as Smithtown High School East’s coordinator for the New York State Seal of Civic Readiness. Most recently, she collaborated with teachers from High School West to develop Advanced Civic Leadership, a new social studies course that teaches students the vital role citizens play in preserving and protecting democracy.
Congratulations, June!
