Mills Pond parent volunteers for Lunar New Year education
Mills Pond Elementary parent volunteers and educators Adrienne Chu and Wan Ling Fahrer recently shared Lunar New Year traditions with students in Mrs. Cesa’s, Mrs. Dooley’s, Mrs. Hoenes’s, Mrs. Lanze’s, and Mrs. McGovern’s classes. Students learned about wearing traditional clothing, hanging red banners for good luck, receiving lucky money in red envelopes, enjoying special holiday foods, watching lion dances, and practicing New Year greetings in Chinese.
They also explored the Chinese Zodiac and discovered that it’s the Year of the Horse! Inspired by a discussion comparing currency from the United States, Hong Kong, and China, students designed their own imaginative “lucky money” — including a trillion-dollar bill — and received red envelopes adorned with a horse to hold their creations.
