Matthew the magnificent!

June 9, 2023

High School West's Matthew Mazza has received the Jodi Shapiro Award, designed to encourage and support students who exhibit abilities beyond the classroom, arts, community service and extracurricular activities beyond the classroom.

The Award Committee of the Long Island Association of Special Education Administrators has established this award to recognize students who have been in a special education program for 60 percent or more of the school day, successfully met goals on his/her IEP and will meet the requirements for completion.

F.A.S.T. program coordinator Lisa Felice says, "Matthew lights up a room and has a natural ability to perform. He loves to entertain people! Matthew plays a variety of instruments and this has given him the ability to memorize many things. He participates in a holiday tradition at SHSW which is basically centered around Matt. He plays the role of Buddy the Elf from the movie ELF. Matthew is a kind-hearted young man, who has accomplished many behavioral and academic goals throughout his high school career."
