Smithtown High School East sophomore Hailey Blumberg is making waves with her award-winning poster in the “Bring Chemistry to Life: Protect Our Marine World” contest!

Created entirely by hand, Hailey’s piece looks at the impact of plastic pollution on our marine ecosystems. Her artwork displays the role science plays in protecting our environment.

“Hailey’s piece shows how chemistry helps us model, explain, or propose solutions to real-world marine issues right here in our community,” exclaimed High School East Science Research Coordinator, Maria Zeitlin.

A student in High School East’s Science Research Program, Hailey stood out among participants from partnering schools, where entries were voted on by fellow student contributors. Her winning design successfully connected key chemistry concepts from the New York State Science Learning Standards to a real-world issue affecting our local waters.

The contest challenged students to think critically and creatively about marine issues through the lens of chemistry. Hailey’s work will be proudly displayed at the upcoming Downstate Marine Science Gathering, where it will be viewed by educators, students, and community members from across the region.

Congratulations, Hailey, on using science and art to inspire change!   Joining Hailey for a picture was Principal Paul McNeil, Director of Science Dr. Stephanie O'Brien and High School East Research Coordinator Maria Zeitlin.
