Leaves of Hope: Dogwood Fifth Graders Learn from the Survivor Tree

In honor of Patriot Day, fifth-grade students at Dogwood Elementary reflected on the enduring strength and resilience of our nation through the powerful story of the 9/11 Survivor Tree.

Discovered in the rubble at Ground Zero weeks after September 11, 2001, the badly burned Callery pear tree showed an incredible sign of life amid unimaginable adversity. With years of careful tending and dedication, the tree grew from just eight feet tall to 30 feet, sprouting vibrant new branches and blooming each spring. In 2010, the Survivor Tree returned home to the 9/11 Memorial plaza, where it continues to serve as a powerful symbol of resilience and renewal.

Through this meaningful living-history lesson, Dogwood's fifth graders explored the true meaning of resilience and our shared ability to recover, heal and move forward after facing tremendous challenges. Connecting the story of 9/11 to themes of unity, perseverance and hope, each student created a leaf featuring a personal message of hope for all Americans.
