IAB breakfast takes center stage in Smithtown

April 19, 2026

”The Smithtown IAB Breakfast, held at the Smithtown Theatre, reflected this year’s mission: connecting industry, inspiring education, and strengthening community.

Among the distinguished guests were Senator Mario Mattera, who offered remarks on the importance of preserving local culture, and Suffolk County Legislator, Sal Formica.

The SCSD was also well represented, including Dr. Kevin Simmons, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction and Administration; Mr. Paul Strader, Assistant of Curriculum and Assessment; and Christine LoFrese, Director of Career and Technical Education.

Originally opened in 1933, the Smithtown Theatre has long served as a cultural hub for the community. Over the decades, it has evolved—from live performances to a movie theater—and now, under the stewardship of the Smithtown Performing Arts Center, it has returned to its roots as a vibrant venue for live shows and theatrical productions. Its revitalization represents both a preservation of history and a vision for the future.

This event marked an important step in uniting community leaders, industry professionals, and educators to better understand the theatre’s revitalization process. As a centerpiece of Smithtown, the theatre plays a vital role in preserving shared memories while creating new ones for future generations

Beyond its cultural significance, the theatre is also positioned to serve as an economic engine for the town. Its continued growth will help energize Main Street, supporting local restaurants, shops, and businesses, and contributing to a thriving downtown environment.

More than 40 leaders from the community, education, and industry sectors attended the breakfast, which was sponsored by the Smithtown Rotary Club and Elegant Eating Caterers. Smithtown Performing Arts Center board members Mario D’Amore (Board Trustee) and Michael Mucciolo (Board President) were also on hand, with Mucciolo presenting the past, current renovations and future needs of the theater.

In closing, Smithtown IAB Executive Director Phil Como emphasized the importance of community, noting that it shapes who we are and who we become. When students feel a sense of pride in their community, they are more likely to grow into successful adults with strong roots and lasting memories.
