High School East Honor Speaker: Madeline McCullough
After a historic voting process, Smithtown High School East senior Madeline McCullough has been selected as this year’s graduation honor speaker.
“Overjoyed, this is something I’ve been dreaming about since 5th grade,” Madeline said.
Gold Cord students cast their votes on April 17 to determine the graduation speaker. When the votes were tallied, Madeline and Tyler Gallub were tied—marking the first time a tie has occurred in the school’s voting process, according to school officials. Principal Paul McNeil announced the tie to students, prompting a runoff vote in which Madeline was ultimately selected.
“It was really intense; I didn’t expect that. I know Tyler would’ve been an amazing choice, we are both in National Honor Society as president and vice president, so either way I was happy with the outcome,” Madeline said.
The announcement came during the Gold Cord Breakfast, which celebrates students who have achieved a cumulative 4.0 GPA, as well as those earning a 4.4 GPA and recognized as Gold Cord with distinction.
Addressing the students, Principal McNeil encouraged them to carry their success forward. “I want you to remember this moment if things get a little tough as a freshman in college—keep this in mind as proof that you can do it. Find your why,” he said.
Graduation is scheduled for Friday, June 26. Head to our social media channels to see video of the moment!
