Hands-On Marine Science

October 13, 2026

Smithtown High School students enrolled in the College of Oceans program recently experienced marine science firsthand during an exciting field trip to Stony Brook University’s Southampton Marine Sciences Center.

Through MAR 104, students can earn three college credits from Stony Brook University while still in high school, exploring marine science, emerging technologies and career opportunities in a rapidly evolving field.

During their visit, students in Ms. Williams’ classes joined the crew aboard the Research Vessel Peconic to help monitor biodiversity in the waters surrounding the Southampton Field Station. They also interacted with the captain and crew, gaining valuable insight into the tools, techniques and real-world applications of marine research.

The students were also fortunate to meet an international team of scientists and engineers who demonstrated the DataXplorer, an innovative piece of scientific equipment used to collect environmental DNA (eDNA) samples. The experience offered students a firsthand look at how cutting-edge technology is advancing marine research and opening doors to exciting new career paths.

Later this year, students will design, engineer and test their own remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). Learning directly from professionals about how these technologies are used in scientific exploration provided valuable inspiration for their upcoming projects.

The Stony Brook and Open Ocean Robotics teams also pledged to stay connected with students throughout the school year, answering questions about marine exploration and sharing updates on their ongoing research.

This unique learning opportunity reflects Smithtown Central School District’s commitment to providing students with meaningful, hands-on experiences that connect classroom learning to college coursework, scientific discovery and future careers.
