HSE's Holy Mary Zaher honored by Suffolk County Legislature

May 2, 2023

Smithtown High School East's Holy Mary Zaher, who recently was named a Regeneron scholar, was recognized for her achievement by the Suffolk County Legislature Tuesday morning.

Holy Mary's research project was titled “The Correlation Between Peroxisome Levels and Short-Term Memory Loss in a PINK1-/- Rat Model of Parkinson's Disease”

This morning, Holy Mary was asked if she would like to say a few words and, as always, eloquently did!

"This is all in the name of science," she said. "All in the name of helping other people and serving other people who unfortunately, not because they did anything wrong get these debilitating diseases and I feel like it's our responsibility if we're blessed with good health that we should do what we can to help others."

Superintendent Dr. Mark Secaur, HSE Principal Rose, Science Research Coordinator Maria Zeitlin & Director of Science Dr. Stephanie O’Brien came to support Holy Mary, as did her mother and brother.  Watch below to see Holy Mary's speech.
