Global Perspective: SCSD students explore East Asia

March 5, 2026

12 students, two countries, six cities. Smithtown High School East & West students took their learning global this winter break.

Students embarked on a transformative journey through South Korea and Japan. Led by district technology integration specialist Tim Needles and High School East reading teacher Jen Micari, the group traveled through Seoul, Busan, Osaka, Nara, Kyoto, and Tokyo. This immersive experience allowed students to step outside the classroom and engage directly with the history, vibrant food cultures, and diverse educational systems of these two global leaders in technology and tradition.

“This trip was an amazing educational opportunity where the students and I had a chance to learn about different cultures and history but also to challenge our own perspectives, stepping out of our comfort zones to become true global citizens who see the world through a much wider lens,” said Needles.

Throughout the trip, students gained invaluable global perspectives, comparing the high-tech urban landscapes of Seoul and Tokyo with the serene, historical landmarks of Kyoto and Nara. From visiting local schools to exploring ancient temples and cutting-edge tech hubs, the students developed a deeper understanding of how different cultures balance their heritage with future-forward innovation.

This international expedition not only broadened their worldviews but also fostered a sense of global citizenship that they will bring back to the Smithtown community.
