From Great Hollow to the sky!

December 11, 2025

Students in the Great Hollow's seventh grade PLTW Flight and Space class are soaring into learning with an immersive virtual aviation experience. Throughout the semester, students have explored the history of aircraft and aviation, studied the parts of an airplane, and learned the science behind how planes fly.

Now, they are putting their knowledge into action using a flight simulation program and aviation joysticks. Students have practiced flying past major world landmarks—including the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower—and have taken off and landed at airports across the globe in countries such as Brazil, France, and Croatia.

For their final assignment, students are completing a long-distance flight from Poughkeepsie, New York, to MacArthur Airport in Islip. Their route takes them down the Hudson River, over Manhattan, along Long Beach on Long Island’s South Shore, and finally back home to land at MacArthur.
