From Folklore to Fun: Italian tradition comes alive at West
Smithtown Central School District Italian teacher Ms. Cava, dressed as the legendary Italian folklore character La Befana, along with her Italian 5 senior students, immersed FAST students at High School West in a rich and engaging Italian cultural experience.
The visit began with a mini-lesson on La Befana, a beloved figure in Italian folklore. FAST students enjoyed a read-aloud of The Legend of Old Befana, a Christmas story retold and illustrated by Tomie dePaola. Ms. Cava and her Italian 5 students brought the story to life through expressive and interactive reading, helping students connect with the tale and its traditions.
To conclude the experience, students participated in a color-by-number ornament activity and enjoyed a traditional Italian bingo game known as Tombola. Throughout the celebration, Ms. Cava shared customary treats of caramelle e carbone(candies and “coal”), adding an authentic and festive touch to the day.
A wonderful time was had by all as students learned, played, and celebrated Italian culture together!
