"We are incredibly proud of the five students from HS East who qualified as National Merit Semifinalists. Chosen from thousands of participants, they represent some of the highest-achieving students in the nation. We look forward to their continued success in the next phase of the competition.,” Smithtown High School East Principal Paul McNeil exclaimed.

“The entire Smithtown High School West community is incredibly proud of our students who have earned recognition as National Merit Semifinalists and Commended Students. Their hard work, determination, and academic excellence have set them apart on a national level. This honor reflects years of tremendous academic effort and highlights our staff's ability to foster a culture of learning and success.” Smithtown High School East Principal William Holl added.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is a nonprofit organization that awards scholarship to high school seniors annually. Semifinalists are chosen based on preliminary SAT scores. Finalists will be chosen based on an essay written by the student, a recommendation from a high school official, and grades and SAT scores that align with the student’s PSAT score.

Congratulations to the students as well as the following guidance counselors:

High School West: Kate Baker-Dorney, Brian Colamussi, Michele Randall and Sara Stone

High School East:  Karen Schmalz, Diane Giannico, Marissa Urso and Kelly Brouthers

Please keep an eye out next week as we will highlight the Merit Scholarship commended students.
