Congratulations, Mrs. Spata!
The Smithtown Central School District is proud to congratulate Mills Pond Elementary School teacher Serena Spata on being named a recipient of the prestigious Elementary Teacher Award from the New York State Association of Teachers of Science (STANYS).
“I am grateful but I was very surprised and I’m just touched by the whole entire thing,” Spata said. “I don’t look for accolades so it was really nice to be acknowledged.”
This distinguished honor recognizes an elite group of science educators who have demonstrated excellence not only in the classroom, but also have developed innovative programs, inspired a love of scientific inquiry, and promoting the growth of science education both in and beyond their schools. For more than 25 years, Mrs. Spata has exemplified those qualities through her dedication to hands-on learning, innovative instruction, and unwavering commitment to student success.
“Serena is a phenomenal educator who possesses a unique ability to spark intense curiosity and excitement in her students,” said Smithtown Central School District Director of Science Dr. Stephanie O’Brien, who nominated her for the award. “She looks past every hurdle in elementary science education with an infectious ‘we got this’ attitude. Her innovative leadership brought a brilliant 11-week Robotics Enrichment Program to all seven of our elementary schools and secured a Western Suffolk BOCES grant to launch a Drone Flight School for our third graders.”
Dr. O’Brien also highlighted Mrs. Spata’s leadership and impact beyond the classroom.
“As a NYS Master Teacher and a recent Smithtown Torch Award recipient, Serena’s 25 years of expertise are matched only by her deep humility and dedication to collaboration,” she said. “She is a true advocate for children and an inspiration to her fellow educators. Congratulations, Serena, on this incredibly well-deserved recognition!”
Congratulations to Mrs. Spata on this outstanding achievement and well-deserved honor.
