Celebrating 50 Years of Smithtown IAB Success

The 2026–2027 school year marks a momentous milestone for our community as the Smithtown Industry Advisory Board (IAB) celebrates 50 years of programming. To kick off this golden anniversary, the IAB held its first meeting of the school year on September 24th. The energy in the room was electric, with over 50 industry partners, 30 students, and more than 20 faculty and administrators in attendance to preview the exciting initiatives planned for this celebratory year.

We were deeply honored to welcome Dr. Edward Bonahue, President of Suffolk County Community College, as our keynote speaker. Dr. Donahue delivered inspiring opening remarks on the vital connection between industry and academia in preparing students for Long Island’s future workforce. He noted that our initiatives directly align with current college programs to streamline student career pathways—a forward-thinking approach that is rare among modern high schools.

Our IAB Student Ambassadors from DECA, Robotics, VE and FCCLA (FLIP)—who serve as officers representing all Career and Technical Education (CTE) department clubs—took center stage to present their current club projects.

Looking ahead, the IAB announced its flagship initiative for the 2026–2027 school year: an impact study to create an "AI Career Ready Framework for Skills."  This study will be a collaborative effort between industry leaders, educators, and the community to determine grade-level appropriate, foundational skills. The goal is to ensure Smithtown students graduate fully prepared to excel and apply themselves in a new, AI-assisted workforce.

This kickoff meeting brought incredible discussion and promise, reinforcing our shared commitment to building a truly exceptional educational environment for Smithtown students. A special thank you to our industry, community and faculty/administrators members who are committed to continue the work of the Smithtown IAB by actively participating in our events.
