Accompsett scientists test Newton's Third Law
Accompsett Middle School seventh-grade scientists stepped into the shoes of automotive engineers for a high-stakes design challenge of protecting a raw egg during a high-velocity impact.
Students in Mr. Preston’s class tested Newton’s Third Law as they designed, built and tested their model cars in an effort to prevent an egg from cracking as theircar rolled down a ramp.
Students had to justify their safety features by explaining how the wall’s reaction force affects the vehicle. “We aren't just teaching formulas. We are teaching students how to iterate, how to fail forward, and how to apply abstract laws of motion to solve human (and egg) safety problems,” Mr. Preston said.
Egg-cellent!
