A Poetic Achievement: West Student Earns Top Honors in Prestigious Competition
Smithtown High School West student Sophia Marmara has earned special recognition in the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association’s 40th Annual Student Poetry Contest. Her poem, Tale of Two Suns, was selected as an Honorable Mention, placing it among the top three poems in its category.
Sophia’s accomplishment is particularly impressive considering the contest received more than 1,600 submissions from talented young writers across the region.
In a congratulatory statement, the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association praised Sophia’s work, stating: “Your poem was chosen from among many outstanding submissions for its creativity, depth, and originality. We were truly impressed by your artistry and the strength of your voice. Your work stood out to our panel of judges and left a lasting impression.”
