Robot success for Smithtown Middle School students

January 26, 2023

The Middle School Robotics teams from Accompsett, Nesaquake and Great Hollow recently competed in the FIRST Lego League Competition at Mineola High School.

The teams met weekly to work on building their robots as well as their poster for this season's innovation project. The theme was SUPERPOWERED presented by Qualcomm Technologies, INC. The objective of the game was to complete as many of the 15 missions on the field map using a robot within 2.5 minutes. The teams used LEGO SPIKE Prime kits to build and program their robot.  As for the innovation project, the team had to identify a specific problem related to improving the energy journey. This project involved researching the problem to design an innovative solution that improves energy uses.

At the competition, the teams completed missions in front of referees to earn points for the game. Then, the teams presented their findings and solution for their innovation project to a judging panel or educators, engineers, and experts explaining the impact it has on others.

From Accompsett, Team 35849 - Accompsett All Stars and Team 43228 - Accompsett Avengers, coached by Technology Teacher, Melannie Ulloa.  From Great Hollow, Team #35850 and Team #42769 coached by Technology Teachers, Caitlin Caputo and Connor Kelly.  From Nesaquake, Team #35848 and Team #41208, coached by Brian Sheridan.  The students were given their challenge on October 3, 2022.
