Accompsett Elementary School students Carley Baltieri and Cassie Thode were recognized last night at the SCSD Board of Education meeting for their efforts in helping save a student who was choking this past January.
Accompsett Elementary Principal Tim Hellmuth praised the students, who saw a student choking on January 17 and ran to lunch aide Stacy Unger.
Unger rushed to the girl, wrapped her arms around her and performed the Heimlich maneuver. The girl began gasping and breathing.
"We often say 'if you see something, say something,'" SCSD Superintendent Dr. Mark Secaur said. "And we are very happy that our students took that to heart when she acted quickly to alert a staff member that a fellow student was choking. Their quick actions allowed the student to get the assistance she needed and we are very proud of them."
