Kudos, Dr. Figueiredo!

May 6, 2024

High School West science research coordinator, Dr. Joanne Figueiredo, was recently honored for her work by the Long Island Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics Education Leadership Association (LISTEMELA).

The STEM Star Award was created to honor teachers who serve as a beacon of light for our students.

Dr. Figueiredo was awarded this recognition for her dedication to equitable student access to high-quality learning experiences in STEM. Dr. Figueiredo has worked in the Smithtown Central School District for 25 years, having taught AP Chemistry and running the science research program. She is a strong advocate for teaching the students skills they will need to be successful in any career path they choose.

Dr. Figueiredo will retire this June, and SCSD Director of Science, Dr. Stephanie O'Brien says "she surely be missed by her students and colleagues!"
