The Smithtown High School West Jazz Choir, Concert Choir, Jazz Ensemble, Concert Orchestra and Symphonic Orchestra recently knocked it out of the park at the Music in the Parks competition festival at Six Flags Great Adventure.
Each ensemble performed three music selections for distinguished adjudicators and were scored according to their performances. The Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Choir, Concert Choir and Symphonic Orchestra all received the highest rating of superior in their respective categories and the Concert Orchestra earned a very high excellent rating.
At the awards ceremony later that day the Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Choir and Symphonic Orchestra all earned 1st place in their respective categories with the Concert Choir earning a very close second place and the Concert Orchestra a respectable fifth place. The Jazz Choir and Symphonic Orchestra were also awarded the high honor of best Overall Ensembles in their categories and Senior Justin Martin earned the individual award of Best Overall Jazz Soloist at the festival.
All together, over 120 Smithtown West musicians participated in the festival and each ensemble that performed played exceptionally well. We are very proud of all the students that participated and look forward to providing more opportunities like this in the future.
