Cold Spring Harbor DNA lab at AMS
Eighth grade students at Accompsett Middle School learned how to genetically engineer bacteria this week, under the guidance of Cold Spring Harbor DNA Lab technician Kelly Eames.
During their science classes, our students were given a small piece of DNA that contains a "glowing gene" which will glow under UV light and is ampicillin resistant. The ones that successfully picked it up glowed after being incubated for two days at room temperature.
Scientists can deliberately modify the DNA of organisms, such as bacteria or plants, to change their properties for a specific purpose.
