Football Teaches Life Lesson

When Smithtown East’s junior varsity football team faced off against Bay Shore on Oct. 7, both teams shared a special moment in the second half of the game. Bay Shore High School sophomore Ramel Johnson, a special education student, was given the ball for the first play of the half. Ramel had a dream of playing football and tried out for the team this season. Bay Shore’s team embraced Ramel, and helped him learn the sport and feel welcome on the team. Ramel had the chance to have a shining moment at Bay Shore’s last JV home game of the season and score a touchdown. “Seeing Ramel race toward the end zone this was a special moment for the entire team and myself, “ said East’s coach Stephen Costello. “The team learned that the game is so small compared to everyday life. This is why coaching is so special because you can impact a player everyday. I strive to teach life lessons everyday.”

Student-athletes commit to college
