Singing like a hummingbird!

April 18, 2024

Students in Mrs. Draiss' second grade class at Tackan Elementary were very creative working on an Earth Day project, creating a recycled hummingbird!

The class discussed being resourceful by using things that would normally be thrown out or recycled to make art.  Students used tissue paper scraps from other projects, newspapers, and cardboard as their recycled art materials. They started with a watercolor crayon resist for our background and recycled newspapers and made them into the petals of flowers.

The students then used tissue paper for the head and body of the hummingbird. Lastly, they peeled back the top layer of the cardboard to reveal the ridges and painted these pieces to create the wing and tail of the bird.

"The students had so much fun using recycled materials to give a textured appearance and create masterpieces of nature for Earth Day!" Mrs. Draiss proudly exclaimed.
