The Smithtown Mechanical Bulls have used their innovative robot design and game strategies to reach the playoffs in a pair of regional FIRST competitions in March.

At the Tech Valley regional, hosted at MVP Arena in Albany, the robotics team reached the semifinals.

At the School Business Partnerships of Long Island #2 regional hosted at Hofstra, the team won the Excellence in Engineering Award.

For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) is an international high school robotics competition.

High School West junior John Galletta was recognized as one of two dean’s list finalists at the regional held at Hofstra.

The prestigious award, named after FIRST founder Dean Kamen, recognizes students who are viewed as role models for other students.

Galletta will represent the team and SBPLI at the world championship in Houston, competing among 250 international candidates.

Technology teachers Brian Costello and Dave Savage serve as the robotics team advisors.
