SMITHTOWN SCHOOLS HONOR 9/11 HEROES

The Smithtown Central School district marked the 21st anniversary of 9/11 within each of its schools on Friday.

The somber ceremonies served as reminders to never forget those who died on that tragic day and also to recognize the sacrifice made by first responders and rescue workers who have since passed away from related illnesses.

High School East’s ceremony took place this morning with a similar ceremony following at High School West in the afternoon.

"It was a day that mixed horror and honor, as well as sacrifice and selflessness," Superintendent Mark Secaur told students and other attendees during the earlier ceremony.

"Today, we honor the memory of the lives lost, both on that day as well as in the years since."

Also in attendance at High School East were Principal Robert Rose, Assistant Superintendent Kevin Simmons, members of the HSE leadership class, leadership teacher Morgan Tavis and members of the American Legion.

A commemorative wreath was placed next to the tree which was planted last year in the 9/11 garden.
