High School East seniors Sarah Schubel and Jonathan Chung were honored Wednesday night by County Executive Steve Bellone with proclamations for placing as Regeneron STS scholars. Sarah and Jonathan, along with High School East science teacher Maria Zeitlin, attended Bellone’s State Of The County address. In their research, Sarah investigated a mechanism for neurodevelopmental disorders utilizing zebrafish as model organisms. Mutating NMDA receptors allowed her to look at the physiological defects that resulted. Jonathan investigated the changes of the coral microbiome under heat stress which is what would occur during oceanic warming. It was found that populations of corals which had heat-loving bacteria on them would have a higher resistance to coral bleaching.
