Fourth and second grade students at St. James Elementary School had a fun filled day learning about the environment last week.
In 4th grade the students explored how to preserve the fresh water resources on Long Island. The students learned that our drinking water comes from an aquifer and its impact on developed and undeveloped land. The students built their own aquifers and experimented with the effect pollution has on our drinking water.
The students also learned about the life cycle of Praying Mantises. In the terrarium is the hardened egg case and the students are anxiously awaiting for the nymphs to emerge. They will eventually release the praying mantises back into nature.
In 2nd grade students were taught about erosion activity.
There was a Stormwater Hero presentation, a PLTW erosion simulation activity and more.
