Smithtown native Jon Gordon preached the power of positivity to High School East and West students in full-school assemblies on Friday.
Gordon, a best-selling author and 1989 High School East alum, returned home to offer the motivational techniques that professional sports organizations and Fortune 500 companies frequently enlist him to share.
Gordon told the students about the “Five D’s” that can negatively affect success:
• Doubt about the future, rather than focusing on winning the day.
• Distortion, rather than speaking truth to the negative thoughts in the mind and externally.
• Discouragement, rather than encouragement.
• Distractions, such as comparing ourselves to others on social media.
• Dividing rather than uniting.
“I came back to share how you defeat those five Ds and defeat the battle in your mind,” Gordon said.
Gordon is the author of “The Energy Bus,” “The Carpenter,” “Training Camp,” “The Power of Positive Leadership,” “The Power of a Positive Team,” “The Coffee Bean” and his latest, “Row the Boat.”
His ’Positive Pledge’ includes: “I pledge to be a positive person and positive influence on my family, friends, coworkers and community. I promise to be positively contagious and share more smiles, laughter, encouragement and joy with those around me. I vow to stay positive in the face of negativity. When I am surrounded by pessimism, I will choose optimism. When I feel fear, I will choose faith. When I want to hate, I will choose love. When I want to be bitter, I will choose to get better. When I experience a challenge, I will look for opportunity to learn and grow. When faced with adversity, I will find strength. When I experience a setback, I will be resilient.”
