Members of High School East’s chapter of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America paid a surprise visit to St. James Elementary on Monday to reward a deserving class.

Robin Baker and Denise Mauceri’s fourth grade class was recognized as the winner among all elementary school classes on the entire east side of the District in the FCCLA’s Fruits and Veggies Challenge.

March was National Nutrition Month, so the challenge asked students to eat as many fruits and vegetables as they could during the month and log their totals.

The Fruits and Veggies Challenge was open to all elementary school students in the District who wished to participate.

The High School West FCCLA conducted a similar contest on the west side.

The high schools’ FCCLA members set up Google Classrooms with tips and videos to help the students throughout the month. The consumption total was calculated weekly.

Barbara Haining’s and Elisabete Patel’s class emerged as Mills Pond Elementary’s winner.

Dogwood’s top performers were the students in Alexandra Panzarino’s class.

For an overall school total, Dogwood Elementary students prevailed on the east side.

All participants received a prize, with the winning classes receiving extra prizes. Baker and Mauceri’s class at St. James Elementary received personalized water bottles.
