The Mt. Pleasant Elementary student council spearheaded the school-wide collection of crayons and markers for children in hospitals.

And on Monday morning, representatives of the charity Splashes of Hope — including mascot Vincent van Monkey — visited the student leaders to collect four boxes of donated supplies and explain how their charity operates.

Splashes of Hope creates murals in pediatric hospitals to help put children at ease during their time of need, including nearby at Huntington Hospital. They also paint murals in nursing homes and other worthy organizations.

Student council advisor Steve Jackowski likes to ask the students themselves which charities to support.

Sarah Jusino, a member of the student council, whose sister Emily also attends Mt. Pleasant, recommended Splashes of Hope. Their mother Cathy, who came to the school on Monday to speak about the charity, is on the foundation’s advisory committee.

“I always try to get ideas from the kids who to help,” Jackowski said.
