High School West seniors Tyler Nagosky and Rehan Mian have been recognized at the New York State Science and Engineering Fair for their scientific research.

Nagosky earned first-place honors and will travel to Atlanta in May to compete in the International Science and Engineering Fair.

Mian earned third place for his work on the evolution of beta adrenergic receptors in the animal kingdom.

Both had projects in the animal science category and used the sea anemone, Nematostella vectensis, to study important biological questions.

Nagosky’s work focused on using Nematostella to study the mechanism of action of a neurotoxin produced during harmful algal blooms. His work may offer clues as to how ALS causes its devastating neurological effects.

“These awards are the culmination of three years of hard work for these two outstanding students,” said Dr. Joanne Figueiredo, the science research coordinator at High School West. “It is so wonderful to see them succeed at such a high level.”
