Smithtown Elementary students received an important lesson on fire safety on Tuesday … with plenty of smiles and magic mixed in.

Presenter Steve Luker taught kindergarteners and first graders important concepts including knowing your home address and how to call 9-1-1, the importance of your family having smoke detectors, knowing two exits from every room, avoiding too many plugs in an outlet, never playing with matches, and “stop, drop and roll.”

Luker encouraged the students to have a fire drill at home with their families. He also encouraged the students to join their parents in a search of their house for potential “hot spots.”

At the end of the presentation, students took a pledge: “I promise that I will never play with matches.”
