Carrie Bodo beamed as she listed the current college lacrosse players who returned to their roots last week to help lead a girls lacrosse camp sponsored by the Smithtown Booster Club. The accomplished group included Jaimie Bell (Pace), Lauren Coletti (Hofstra), Gabrielle Marshall (Binghamton),Gabby Schneider (Lehigh), Janine Suras (Florida) and Ella Whitehouse (Stony Brook).

In all, they mentored 77 attendees at the lacrosse camp ranging from third through 12th grades.

“We’re promoting Smithtown lacrosse in general,” said Bodo, who currently coaches at Accompsett Middle School after successful tenures at Smithtown West as well as at Hofstra. “It is a together, Town of Smithtown camp.”

With summer now in full swing, Smithtown Booster Club youth camps are back in full force. Last week, boys basketball, football and softball camps took place in addition to girls lacrosse — with a combined 312 participants across the four sports.

This week, baseball takes center stage. That’s the booster club’s largest camp, with more than 130 attendees expected at Smithtown East.

Local youth receive expert instruction from the high school and middle school coaches as well as alums currently playing in college.

The Smithtown Booster Club uses the proceeds to support athletics throughout the district.

One example: The booster club donated a combined $50,000 in weight room equipment to the two high schools during the just-completed academic year. Another $50,000 in equipment is slated to be delivered during the 2021-22 academic year as well.

The booster club also annually sets aside $25,000 in scholarship grants for graduating seniors.

“This is our major source of revenue in order to support the programs we sponsor and the things that we purchase for athletics,” said Dave Miller, president of the Smithtown Booster Club.

Plenty of opportunities for Smithtown youth to participate this summer remain.

Other camps include baton twirling, cheerleading, cross country, field hockey, girls basketball, kickline, boys lacrosse, boys and girls soccer, tennis, boys and girls volleyball, and wrestling.
