An ‘Egg’-cellent Experiment at Mt. Pleasant

Mt. Pleasant Elementary School held its 22nd annual egg drop for its fifth grade students on June 7. The Mt. Pleasant fifth graders used their knowledge garnered from their MSTe/Project Lead the Way science programs to design an “egg craft” capable of successfully landing on an alien surface (the school’s playground). An egg was placed in the craft as the astronaut needed to survive the landing.

The craft was designed to meet a specific set of parameters which dictated certain constraints on the craft such as weight, materials and size. The crafts were launched from the roof of the school building, and those crafts that survived the first drop were then relaunched from an even higher section of the building. In the end, eight out of 79 crafts had their astronaut eggs survive.
