HSE student wins for best design in Brookhaven National Lab Bridge Building Contest

At this year’s Bridge Building Contest on March 15, Smithtown HS East junior Karina Hunstein won the overall Aesthetic Award for the best design and construction of a model bridge. Hunstein’s design incorporated a strong arch as well as triangular support structures, and was very precisely crafted. The contest, sponsored by Brookhaven National Laboratory, is designed to promote the study and application of principles of physics and engineering and also help students develop “hands on” skills. Through participating, students get a flavor of what it is to be an engineer, designing structures to a set of specifications (“specs”) and then seeing them perform their function.
