During the Sept. 24 Board of Education meeting, the trustees paused to recognize several High School West students’ contributions to the arts.

The board recognized Zachary Ketchum for being named a Merit-Award Winner by the Long Island Arts Alliance in the category of theater. Sponsored by the New York Community Bank Foundation and produced by Newsday, the LIAA annually recognizes students who excel in both academics and the arts in the areas of music, visual arts, dance, theater and media arts. Ketchum was sponsored by English teacher James Brannigan, who also coached his monologue performance. Music teacher James Brosnan also coached and accompanied Ketchum on piano during his vocal performance.

High School West’s Thespian Troupe 2035 submitted an original short play titled “The Sweater” to the Stage the Change: Arts as a Social Voice Conference, being held on Nov. 1 at LIU Post’s Tilles Center for the Performing Arts. The submission about body-shaming in high school received the distinction of honorable mention, and the troupe members have been invited to perform the piece for students and educators as part of the conference’s “Discover the Work” session. Under the direction of thespian adviser James Brannigan, the following students authored and performed the piece: Kathleen Alexander, Kyra Drannbaur, Kristina Erwin, Annabella Hernandez, Erika Hinneman, Jessica Hymowitz, Erika Loer, Keeley O’Malley, Sarah Russo, Natalie Ryan, Amanda Sinclair and Jason Suris.

The district congratulates the students on these outstanding accomplishments.
