Smithtown Central School District’s extended school year program helps to create opportunities for students to continue their academics throughout the summer months. This year’s theme of “Gratitude, Growth and Learning” ties into the district’s social-emotional learning initiatives.

“Along with addressing academics and each child’s individualized goals to prevent skill regression, we touched upon important social-emotional topics,” said Matt Connolly, lead teacher. “We worked on establishing friendships, promoting empathy, conflict resolution and developing compassion.”

This summer, 116 students were enrolled in the program in 11 different classes housed at Smithtown Elementary School. Students participated in specials including computers, physical education, and group activities such as field day, carnival day and an end-of-summer picnic.
